The purpose of V-Mount inter cooler setups started becoming common in the likes of Sport Compact magazines circa early 2000’s. These setups were seen particularly in the Mazda RX-7 FD platform competing in Drift events. The purpose of this design was to shorten inter cooler piping resulting in faster spool times, and better throttle response. The main goal was to have the absolute optimal cooling efficiency as possible.

However unlike conventional front mount inter cooler setups, the inter cooler core is not blocking the radiator. However with FMIC setups, the air is only hitting the front face on the inter cooler. With the V-mount setup air is cooling more than one angle of both the inter cooler, as well as the radiator. You have an even cooling effect in most designs for both the radiator and intercooler, rather than providing all the air flow to the inter cooler.

While drifting, the engine stays within the peak of the power band. So it makes sense for turbocharged vehicles to have the most effective way of cooling as possible. This is when those competing in time attack events opted to use the same design.

Creating something like this will be anything but easy. With limited space within your bumper, there will have to be a precise amount of measurements.  What radiator can I use? What kind of inter cooler core can be used, and more importantly how many degrees can everything be angled at? Fortunately our friends at Process West have already taking the guessing game out of the equation.
