Third-Generation Subaru Boxer Engine

I know right? About time! The second gen motors have been in use for about 21 years now since the first Legacy models in 1989, so I can safely say that this is long overdue.

The new motor will remain horizontally-opposed like its predecessors which will allow it to remain lightweight, compact, keep a low center of gravity, and have superior vibration balance characteristics. Aside from being based off the boxer platform, it will be completely re-designed. What we know so far is that the new-generation will remain 2.0L and 2.5L respectively. As far as performance goes, we will see an increase in stroke length as well as the utilization of AVCS (Active Valve Control System) on both intake and exhaust cams (much like the 08+ STi). The increased stroke length will help provide more torque in the lower to mid RPM range. Using lighter pistons and connecting rods as well as a more efficient fuel pump, friction loss will be reduced up to 30%. What that translates to is a 10% improvement in fuel efficiency and smoother acceleration in all speed ranges.

Expect to see the new motor used first in the Forester before making its way into the other platforms later on. Unfortunately, Subaru has not provided any power numbers yet so we will have to wait and see but we are definitely excited to see what this thing can do, performance wise 😉 .
